A Value-Driven Approach for the Future of Project Management

Dr. Harold Kerzner

Over the years, a new breed of project manager has appeared. The new project manager has significantly more business knowledge than their predecessors. The project manager must make both project and business-related decisions and manage multiple stakeholders, each of whom has a different definition of project success, different reporting requirements and a different perception of value at the end of the project. As a further complication, the true value of the project may not be known until well after the project is completed.

In addition, the new project managers will be assigned to nontraditional or more complex projects where the enterprise environmental factors will change continuously, the statement of work may be ill-defined initially, and the assigned resources may have personal values that are not aligned with the project’s expected value at completion. The triple constraint, as we know it, may have to be modified to include a value component for these nontraditional projects and the traditional earned value measurement system will be replaced with a value measurement methodology.

The 10-80-10 Principle

Sunjay Nath

lee-lambertIn any situation, whether it be on a personal or organizational level, there is always room to improve and increase leadership, performance, and success. The difficulty in doing so is identifying the correct place to concentrate our efforts. Often, we focus on problem behaviours that seem to be dragging us down.

Sunjay Nath’s 10-80-10 Principle breaks down situations into sets of behaviours; the top 10% behaviours (Top 10) and the bottom 10% behaviours (Bottom 10). Rather than focusing constructive energy trying to improve the Bottom 10 which are the most difficult to modify, the 10-80-10 Principle prescribes recognizing, developing and empowering the Top 10 while neutralizing the Bottom 10. This seemingly subtle difference in approach has a significant impact on performance.

By delivering the 10-80-10 Principle in an inspiring, humorous, and energetic presentation, Sunjay Nath keeps his audiences motivated and captivated to the message. Sunjay has unlocked the benefits of the 10-80-10 Principle for almost a million people around the world, including presenting at Project World in 2009.
